Hallmarking
Proof that your metal is what we say it is.
Under the Hallmarking Act 1973 it is an offence to describe an item as gold, silver, platinum or palladium in the course of business unless it is hallmarked, above set weights: gold 1 g, silver 7.78 g, platinum 0.5 g and palladium 1 g. A UK hallmark is applied by an independent assay office after testing.
The marks
- Sponsor's mark
- Who made or sent the piece for testing.
- Fineness mark
- The metal's purity in parts per thousand: 375 (9ct), 585 (14ct), 750 (18ct) gold, 925 sterling silver.
- Assay office mark
- Which independent office tested it: London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh.
On your piece
Every Bite Club piece has a piece record in the app showing its metal, fineness, weight and hallmark. Pieces under the exemption weights may not be hallmarked; your record says so.
